Fish for Prizes

The Federation runs a fish of the month competition throughout the year.  This is awarded for the best specimen registered, boat and shore. Also for the best junior specimen registered overall.

Certificates are also awarded for every specimen fish recorded.

These are presented at the AGM/Presentation night.

More details can be found in the Fish Recording page.

We have asked a question to the Marine Management Organisation regarding the wording of returned immediately and through correspondence with them I can now put out the following statement:-

Bass can be accepted for Federation Awards but must be cared for, then weighed immediately after capture using a weigh sling to cradle the fish, returning it unharmed.
This is for shore caught fish only and normal federation rules apply regarding certified scales.
The intention from the MMO, with both ‘catch-and-release’ and ‘returned immediately’ is that the bass is returned to the sea healthy and able to survive and reproduce.
What can’t happen is that fish are kept alive and weighed at the end of a competition. This would in the view of the enforcement agency constitute being retained and therefore could face prosecution.

It was clear from the correspondence that at no time must any measuring (or other activity) affect the fish’s ability to survive. The key is that they are returned to the sea as soon as possible after measuring, thus ensuring survival.
